No reason at all to have these intersections of categories for two things near one another in Pike Place Market distinguished as a category of its own. Just put them in both parent categories. Jmabel ! talk 22:57, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have time, until tomorrow, Weds to provide the background. I'll be back. Chris Light (talk) 23:03, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, when I added or planned to add an image of the market sign, I noticed that the LaSalle Hotel is clearly visible in many of the images, then, also the Leland Hotel and sometimes both. There were already a number, say 70 images which looked a lot alike. Since it would be inappropriate to keep only the 'best', and who gets a vote of that, I looked for distinguishing objects in the images to provide some an internal category. My goal in being involved in the wikimedia project is to document the less photographed places and to photograph places with lots of images with unique images, most often close details, lintels, brickwork, railings. THe Market has a lot of images in the system. I often find that many look like they were taken from the same camera location. The market sign is a good example as there are only so many angles it can be seen from at the Pike St & First Ave intersection. Thus, I ended up with seeing the only quantifiable differences in images as being 1) basically the sign, 2) the LaSalle Hotel clearly visible, or 3) the Leland Hotel clearly visible. I didn't want to add a 4th with both hotels visible. Don't know that it worked. The subcategories only cut the images for each hotel in half and the same for the Market Sign images. And --> they really aren't very different.

My longer take:
  1. I wouldn't choose to do category intersections like this. Intersection categories like this are much harder to maintain. A tourist who takes a photo that is mainly of the sign will typically think to put it in the category for the sign, but won't think of any of the rest of this, which I think we can both agree is less important than the sign, because in photos that include the sign the sign is almost always the main subject, and therefore the most important category to have.
  2. Still, if you are going this way you pretty much need to also add the one where you intersect again to get both hotels. Otherwise, you still end up with a bunch of images in two (now much more verbose) categories for this purpose, which is more or less where we started in the first place, but harder to navigate because deeper down the hierarchy. I feel like the current solution falls between two stools.
  3. I'd settle for a compromise that "w" should become "with", and that we do a further Category:Public Market Center sign with the LaSalle and Leland Hotels. I think it should be either that or the way it was in the first place. - Jmabel ! talk 14:58, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's been since May and I'm just getting back. I'll deconstruct the intersecting categories and move all images back to the three categories: [[:Category:Leland Hotel (Seattle)]], [[:Category:LaSalle Hotel]], [[:Category:Leland Hotel (Seattle)]]. I've noticed that many categories have in excess of 400 images, which these three don't. I'll put effort into pushing down those numbers using existing sub-category titles. @Chris Light: thanks. You say you'll do this: do you know one or another of the tools to do this quickly? If not, let me know, because I can do this pretty quickly with VFC. - Jmabel ! talk 20:27, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, don't know the variety of tools available. I'm glad to make the changes manually if need be. Chris Light (talk) 03:52, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No, I'll do it, it will be quick. - Jmabel ! talk 07:02, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Got rid of these arbitrary intersection categories, back to the categories for the hotels, sign, etc. - Jmabel ! talk 07:08, 16 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
