FYI
[edit]|
This user’s Internet access will be switched to a new connection around Monday/Tuesday, 8/9 December 2025. The company carrying out the work, a well-known big German telecommunications company and internet service provider, is known for its particular expertise, diligence, and care. Therefore, as experience has shown, the result can be a long-term complete outage of Internet access; fixing that may take weeks of negotiations with the excellent company. The user therefore apologises for any sudden and possibly weeks-long complete absence: this is not intentional, but to a certain extent a natural disaster, as always when you have to deal with these big telcos. |

Done OK, the technicians have left and there is again a working connection – seems this time “I am escaped by the skin of my teeth.” ;–) – Aristeas (talk) 13:51, 9 December 2025 (UTC)

Updates for editors
View all 18 community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week. For example, one of the fixes addressed an issue for temporary accounts adding an external URL, which triggered an hCaptcha request in more cases than intended, and did not display the required popup on the first attempt to publish the edit. [1]
Updates for technical contributors
- To improve database and site performance, external links to Wikimedia projects will no longer be stored in the database. This means they will not be searchable in Special:LinkSearch, will not be checked by the Spam Blacklist or AbuseFilter as new links, and will not be in the
externallinkstable on database replicas. In the future this may be extended to other highly-linked trusted websites on a per-wiki basis, such as Creative Commons links on Wikimedia Commons. [2]

Updates for editors
- From January, edit filters can be set to automatically suppress their details such as rules and list of attempted edits and actions. This will help oversighters use edit filters to prevent doxxing or other suppressible material. [3]
- The next issue of Tech News will be sent out on 12 January 2026 because of the end of year holidays. Thank you to all of the translators, and people who submitted content or feedback, this year.

Updates for technical contributors
- Interface elements such as diffs and categories generated by MediaWiki used to have the attribute
data-mw="interface"to distinguish from wiki content. The attribute has been replaced withdata-mw-interface="", to avoid potential conflicts with otherdata-mwattributes, which are generated by Parsoid. [5]
There is no new MediaWiki version this week or next week.
Meetings and events
- The Wikimedia Hackathon Northwestern Europe 2026 will take place on 13-14 March 2026 in Arnhem, the Netherlands. Applications just opened mid-December and will close in mid-January or earlier if capacity is reached. With space for approximately 100 participants, early application is encouraged.

I hope you find some time to relax and wish you all the best for the new year 2026! -- XRay I remember a beautiful quote by Selaru Ovidiu that I found this year and think is very fitting: Photography is not made to impress others. - That’s fine, Petro ;–). I just noticed that your uploads and nominations were still not auto-patrolled, and thought that should be changed because you are a well-established trustworthy contributor. Having your uploads and edits auto-patrolled helps us all because it makes it easier to distinguish between edits by trustworthy users and edits by new and inexperienced users who may need attention or even supervision. Wish you a Happy new year, — Aristeas (talk) 10:06, 2 January 2026 (UTC)
Meinung erwünscht
[edit]Hallo lieber Aristeas,
Your Most Memorable Shot Submission!
[edit]Hello Aristeas!

As we step into a new year, we’re happy to invite you to take part in “Your Most Memorable Shot 2025.”
Since 2018, photographers from across the Wikimedia community have come together at the beginning of each year to share the photographs that meant the most to them over the past twelve months. Now in its eighth iteration, this tradition continues to be a space for reflection, storytelling, and celebrating meaningful moments through photography.
Whether you are a member of the Commons Photographers User Group or not, you are warmly welcome to participate and invite others too. Every image carries a story, and your perspective helps enrich this collective showcase.
Whenever you’re ready, please select your most cherished photograph from 2025 and share it on the designated page.
The deadline for submissions is 28 February 2026, so we hope you’ll join us before then.
We look forward to discovering the moments that made your year memorable and to continuing this wonderful tradition together.
Warm regards, -- Suyash Dwivedi (💬) 22:36, 4 January 2026 (UTC) (CPUG)
